Potential side effects & unknowns
This compound deserves a stronger warning than most pages. FDA has cited published serious adverse-event reports involving Melanotan II, including melanoma, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, sympathomimetic toxidrome and priapism. Other reported effects include nausea, flushing and appetite changes.
Research highlight
Melanocortin agonism can increase pigmentation, which explains why Melanotan II attracted attention in tanning research. That pharmacologic effect is not the same as demonstrating safe cosmetic use, and serious safety concerns have been reported.
